INSPIRED BY THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we connected with Charlene Koh, a breast cancer survivor who recently started her own line of essential oils and scented candles, Breathe Essentials Co.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Singaporean women. All women are at risk of breast cancer, and the chances of it developing increase with age.

1. How did you feel when you first received the news?

I was diagnosed on April 08 2019 just last year. I was at the prime of my life. I was successful, confident and ready to take on the next challenge in life but the last thing I expected was breast cancer. “It can’t be me..” I thought to myself, when I first heard the words: “You have cancer.”. Was this karma ? Did I do a bad deed that led to this? Why is life so unfair? I really didn’t deserve this, I ate well, I was fit and healthy and my family did not have any breast cancer history. Life was really testing me.

2. What was the most difficult part of your journey and what kept you going?

Chemotherapy was the most challenging part of my cancer treatment. I wanted to rid all cancer cells and also knew that the chances of it coming back was close to zero. I detected my cancer at stage 0-1 and early detection definitely led to it being curable. What kept me going was the thought that cancer can be treated being well again. I want to be treated and fully recover. I knew I had many good years ahead of me and that once this physical challenge was overcome and over, I would have many many happy and healthy years ahead of me.

3. Did you have a support network? If not, how did you overcome or find it?

I had a supporter who I befriended at the oncologist’s clinic. She had breast cancer 15 years ago and is now cancer free. She was my biggest supporter through my journey. I definitely had family and friends around me motivating and encouraging me but it really takes one to know one. Cally was my biggest pillar of support as she understood what I was going through emotionally and physically as she had already experienced it firsthand herself.

4. What was the most important thing you learnt from this experience?

I learnt that I could always be more than I could ever dream of.

5. What was your inspiration behind starting your business?

The idea for Breathe Essentials was founded during my chemotherapy journey. I relied heavily on essential oils and focused a lot more on self care and my mental health. I wanted a homegrown label that specialised in essential oils and also home essentials that everyone could have or use for their own self care.

6. How has your breast cancer journey reshaped you as an entrepreneur?

Cancer has shaped me into a better entrepreneur. I realise that I am very privileged and very blessed to be able to afford being in private healthcare, and not worry about finances but there are others out there who aren’t as fortunate as me due to their circumstances. I founded Breathe Essentials to inspire and give people comfort in times of need and also to help them heal. We also donate 10% of our proceeds to the Breast Cancer Foundation. A little goes a long way and I want to help someone else i need.

My breast cancer journey has also shaped the way i perceived beauty. After losing a breast to cancer, i really struggled with this new body and also whether i was still feminine or 100% “whole” but true beauty runs beyond. Beauty represents strength, confidence and showing off your delicate side.

7. Do you have an offering hand for everyone fighting breast cancer right now?

You don’t have to go through your cancer journey alone. Cancer support is readily available. I know some days you would feel like utter crap but there are also good days. Treasure the good days and celebrate every milestone you have.

Mother’s Day 2020

“A mother is she who can take the place of all others, but whose place no one else can take.” – Cardinal Mermillod

This very special mother’s day, we spoke to 5 enterprising mummies who shared on how life at home has changed for them during this circuit breaker as well as some tips on how they manage their work and businesses while taking care of their families.

Cheryl Wee

WHAT IS YOUR NO 1. TIP ON BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY?

To be honest, I’m learning too. Especially during this circuit breaker, I had to quickly relearn how to cope, and coincidentally, we had to let 2 helpers go, one of whom takes care of Marc, so I’ve been struggling at being a stay home working mom. For now, taking care of the kids takes precedence, because I’m responsible for their sleeping, waking, eating, feeding, changing diapers, activity time, and it’s overwhelming at times especially with 2 under 2.

So work is taking a back seat for now, and i ask Roy to help our with work. Another thing is, set a timetable, a time for everything, so everything is less haphazard. In the time I’m supposed to work, I do the best I can to finish up, so when I’m with the kids, I won’t have to worry.

But for my number 1 tip, write down everything u need to do, and strike it off as a checklist. When I write things down, I have less tendency to forget or miss out on things and rush last minute.

HOW ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY COPING WITH THIS CIRCUIT BREAKER.. HOW ARE YOU KEEPING (YOUR KIDS) BUSY?

It’s good but also physically and mentally draining. Mainly because I am shorthanded at home, which leaves most of the children’s care to me, which means I’m really tied down by them and unable to work. Plus it is physically tiring to take care of 2 under 2. I now have a new found respect for stay home moms!! You guys are amazingly strong!

We also make it a point to keep our spirits up and stay positive, besides living together and seeing each other 24/7, plus WFH is actually not easy with kids, somehow while it’s a lot busier and more stressful, we try our best to be tolerant and keep moving forward.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ENCOURAGEMENT FOR ALL THE MOTHERS OUT THERE?

You are enough! You as a person and all you’ve done is enough.

Tay Kewei

WHAT IS YOUR NO 1. TIP ON BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY?

Mom guilt is definitely real, as a lot of us can’t deal with focusing on only work, but being a full time mom is also not our cup of tea. I feel that recognizing we are not alone and sharing our struggles with fellow mums definitely helps!

HOW ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY COPING WITH THIS CIRCUIT BREAKER.. HOW ARE YOU KEEPING (YOUR KIDS) BUSY?

I can’t keep up with engaging him all day, so I do use screen time when I need him to be quiet, though I don’t wish to! We definitely use different activities like LEGO, play dough, books and activities to engage him in learning as well.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ENCOURAGEMENT FOR ALL THE MOTHERS OUT THERE?

This Mother’s Day is extra special because of circuit breaker! We had the time to bond with our kids and really spend time with our families, so I just wanna wish all Mums a lovely Mother’s Day, and to treasure such special times that are rare to come by.

WHAT IS YOUR NO 1. TIP ON BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY?

Delegate. Get all the help you need. Don’t burnout yourself with unnecessary chores. There is only one of you and you should prioritise what you do yourself. With family, it’s more important to be present, to do things WITH your family rather than FOR your family.

HOW ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY COPING WITH THIS CIRCUIT BREAKER.. HOW ARE YOU KEEPING (YOUR KIDS) BUSY?

This CB is challenging but we also think it’s a blessing in disguise. I get to spend quality time everyday with my son and my husband, who’s usually really busy at work. We keep busy by staying active, and doing things together as a family.. as this takes up a lot more time than doing things alone!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ENCOURAGEMENT FOR ALL THE MOTHERS OUT THERE?

You know what’s best for your children, don’t let the world question your choices.

WHAT IS YOUR NO 1. TIP ON BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY?

Remember that this is new to everybody, including your kid!
It was really hard for me at first, trying to take on the homeschool mother role. I got frustrated when I planned activities and my son couldn’t focus and only wanted to play. Then I realized that this is new for him too, and he needs time to adapt to his previous notion of home = play, that home = a place of learning now as well. I took time to explain to him what I was trying to do and told him I’m now Teacher Mama. Now he asks for Teacher Mama even on Sundays and I’m like “Sorry I’m off today!”

HOW ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY COPING WITH THIS CIRCUIT BREAKER.. HOW ARE YOU KEEPING (YOUR KIDS) BUSY?

I quite enjoy the Circuit Breaker because it’s forcing me to adapt to a new environment and learn new things like how to bring my music on virtual events. Especially during this time where there are no physical boundaries at home, my husband and I try to plan meetings around each other, to make sure we don’t clash and both of us can take turns to have uninterrupted meetings.

I’m keeping my son busy or he’s keeping me busy? Haha. I try to plan different topics for each week E.g Nature, Science, Music so there’s a running theme for all the activities we do together! Also, my son has watched The Lion King movie (1.5 hours) 5 times in this Circuit Breaker already haha!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ENCOURAGEMENT FOR ALL THE MOTHERS OUT THERE?

There’s no perfect mother because we all make mistakes, so keep loving and learning how to be a better version of yourself everyday.

Jenny Tay

WHAT IS YOUR NO 1. TIP ON BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY?

My number 1 tip on balancing work and family is to be fully present in whatever you are doing. Sometimes, your day gets so busy that it passes by in a blur so it’s better to carve out dedicated work time and family time separately so that you can give your 100 percent in each and be fully present whenever you can.

HOW ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY COPING WITH THIS CIRCUIT BREAKER.. HOW ARE YOU KEEPING (YOUR KIDS) BUSY?

We are thankful that we can take this opportunity to spend good quality time with our kids. As our kids are still really young , we aren’t that stressed up about home based learning. My 2 year old toddler gets to free play alot , with her day comprising a mix of painting , reading , water play and joining us in our daily mat exercise regime.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ENCOURAGEMENT FOR ALL THE MOTHERS OUT THERE?

We may not be able to give our kids 100 percent of our time , but it’s the quality of those moments spent together that matters the most. Be fully present in those moments that you have together

Style Lease x Crib Ball: WARRIORS AND GODDESSES

CRIB BALL

A annual event to help raise funds towards CRIB’s programs, in particular CRIB’s charity arm CRIB Gives Back, and its beneficiary charity for the year.

THE CAMPAIGN

Are you a warrior or a goddess? This was the question posed for this year’s Crib Ball. This pays tribute to Wonder Woman, the DC Comics warrior and demi-goddess character known to be a proponent of peace and advocates love for humankind. That also explains why the ball, which was held at The Ritz-Carlton Millenia Hotel Singapore on Nov 29, had been themed “Island of Themyscira: Warriors and Goddesses”. That evening, female trailblazers and changemakers were recognised and celebrated for their outstanding achievements, inspiring stories, and entrepreneurial spirit.

(Read more on this exclusive article on TATLER…)

This year, to raise awareness fro CRIB, the ball and its philanthropic initiatives, Style Lease dressed 8 women, Aarika Lee, Melissa Koh,  Tjin Lee, Anna Haotanto, Loh May-Han, Denise Keller, Cheryl Wee and our very own founder Ang Jinyuan to the theme. FINDING THE PERFECT DRESS TO DRESS YOUR BUMP

At the mention of “maternity wear”, images of tent-like dresses and often unsightly elastic panels come to mind. When dressing for a formal or black tie event, everyone wants to look smart and feel confident. This is particularly difficult for mummies-to-be, due to our ever-changing body shape.

Here are some ideas for nesting mothers who want to dress easily and comfortably but still want to look chic.

1.Simplicity is Key

Elongate your body by keeping to solid colours and long lines. Flowing dresses are a more forgiving style, falling gracefully over your bump and giving you more comfort and ease as well. Contrary to popular belief, wearing more accessories does not distract from your pregnancy.  Minimize on accessories to highlight the best accessory- your baby bump.

2.Wrap it Up
Many people think wearing bodycon clothing make you look bigger than you are. On the contrary, it’s one of the most flattering shapes. A wrapped style is especially forgiving and should be a staple in all maternity wardrobes.
Wrap dresses are also the most versatile as you can wear it throughout your pregnancy, emphasising on your curves and minimising your flaws.

3.Show some Skin

For most mummies to be, clothing is usually preferred to be less revealing to conceal bloating and less flattering areas of the body. Many think showing skin usually refers to decolletage, midriff or legs, but there is one area that is often forgotten.
Backless gowns are a classy way of making you feel more alluring, and has a lesser chance of letting you suffer any wardrobe malfunctions.

THE BEST GLAMOUR DRESS FOR YOUR FLAWS

All women want to look their best, especially when the occasion calls for it, such as when the dress code dictates you have to don an evening gown. Like most women, you will probably be interested in minimising your “figure flaws”.

Style Lease, shares some tips on selecting the best dresses for each concerned area you may have, to best flatter your figure.

If your area of concern is flabby arms:

Fret not if you don’t have perfectly toned biceps and triceps, sleeved dresses or pieces that incorporate a cape would help hide your flaws.

If your area of concern is having broad shoulders or being busty:

Most women are the object of envy when they have broad shoulders or a large bust. However, not all kinds of styles flatter these assets, and in particular, you should avoid pieces with heavy detailing on the top and halter neck styles as they will draw attention to your areas of concern.

Instead, choose a mermaid style dress with a defined corset to accentuate your bust would be ideal. Alternatively, pick a piece that has diagonal details at the top or one that has cut out shoulders to create the illusion of a more proportionate figure.

If your area of concern is a flabby tummy:

This is one of the areas that most ladies are concerned about, but the good news is that there are still many ways to look fabulously stylish. There are many styles that are flattering – layering, vertical lines, asymmetrical tops, drapes, peplums add structure to your figure with more defined bust and waist areas and cover up the tummy area.

If your area of concern is large and curvy hips:

Sexy and feminine hips are definitely a good asset, but pieces with a maxi cut won’t flatter your feminine figure. If you have a curvy bottom, you will want to draw the attention away from your bottom half. Pick dresses with a high slit that show off your legs or those with an A-line silhouette and flowy empire waist cut.
